How 3 Entrepreneurs Went from Welfare to Multi-Million Business in Five Years

Zaycon Fresh is an unusual business with an unusual story. Two brothers and their cousin, all on welfare after they fell on hard times during the recession, decided to start a business. Today, this business holds events throughout the country where they deliver proteins like chicken, bacon, salmon, steak and more in bulk to customers -- directly from farmers -- at value pricing.
After starting with a test event in 2009 that brought in revenue of $40,000, the company is on track to do $30 million for this fiscal year, it says.
I first heard about Zaycon Fresh from my husband, who has had a client relationship with the company. That’s how I was introduced to Zaycon’s CEO Mike Conrad. With no formal business background and no college degree, Conrad talks about the entrepreneurial lessons he learned from taking his circumstances and turning them into a major business opportunity.
Timing is everything.
For Zaycon, the third time was the charm, so to speak. Mike Conrad’s brother, J.C. -- who was a co-founder and is no longer with the company -- conceptualized the business when he was a meat manager for a supermarket. He did a proof-of-concept test to see if he could get customers to buy in bulk at discounted prices and it was a significant success.
He took that proof-of-concept and tried to launch the business himself in 2000, but was not successful. It wasn’t until after the Internet infrastructure was built up enough to support this event-based business -- and he found partners in his brother and cousin, Adam Kremin -- did this concept get legs as a standalone business.
Remember that even the best ideas may not be successful if launched at the wrong time.
Build your brand the hard way.
Building a business and a brand is difficult, so Conrad and his co-founders decided to start where they had support: with local churches. These institutions helped to spread the word about their premier Zaycon event and continue to be big supporters. The events are often held in church parking lots where there is often extra unused space. Plus, the church benefits from awareness in addition to a Zaycon donation of food.
After the success of the first event, Zaycon’s next endeavor was to engage coupon and deal-oriented bloggers. They reached out to 1,000 bloggers to see if they would be interested in reviewing the company’s product and approximately 450 responded yes. Since Zaycon delivers farm-fresh product, they wanted the experience to be authentic, so they rented a few trucks and hand delivered the 450 boxes of product to bloggers all across the country. This extra effort, while time-consuming, made a big impact. As these bloggers raved about Zaycon, they started adding thousands upon thousands of customers to their database. This was the catalyst for major growth.
Too many entrepreneurs want to do traditional marketing strategies from the get go, but sometimes, doing the high-labor-intensive, out-of-the-box efforts create the foundation that your business needs for growth.

Create the ‘right’ team.

To take the business from nothing to $30 million in sales, Conrad says was a true team effort. It was all about having the right people in the right places at the right time. While his brother was a co-founder, he ultimately felt he wasn’t suited for business growth and was bought out of the business.
Also, as the company grew, Conrad and his cousin knew that there many traditional business competencies that they didn’t possess. They sought advisors and hands-on investors who could help supplement those skill and knowledge deficiencies and bring the company to the next level.

Involve your customers.

You might not think that bulk meats is an enthusiast-driven business, but Zaycon proves that it can be. By involving the customers in everything from initial marketing -- (new events are set when a core group of interested customers in a certain geographic area sign-up) -- to creating a fun experience, the business gets extra mileage.
As Conrad said, “People wanted to be involved in your business. When they feel involved, they want to support you.” That has certainly been the case for Zaycon’s excited customer base, some of whom “volunteer” for free food at events and certainly create a community around Zaycon’s model that helps the company to build its business.

Create a defense with intellectual property.

While the price point and freshness are customer selling points of Zaycon’s model, their secret sauce is actually their logistics. They have invested heavily in creating software systems that help them manage the farm-to-customer logistics of food delivery and event production.
Conrad relates that while the business seems simple in concept, the logistics are very complicated, and their investment in logistics IP helps to create barriers to entry from competitors.

Be willing to change.

Conrad’s parting words are the ones that he thinks are maybe the most important for entrepreneurs. “Be malleable,” he said. “You have to adapt and change. There were at least four times when we thought that the business was dead, but we knew that was not an option. We couldn’t quit, we had to keep going.”
He also said that the willingness to change comes into play in terms of listening. “Always believe you are not the smartest guy in the room and let other people bring ideas to the table,” said Conrad. The path you start for your business -- and often your endpoint as well -- will change drastically as you build the company.
Zaycon Fresh continues to grow and prosper and will rely on their own history lessons to move them forward to the next level of success.

4 Lifestyle Changes That Will Boost Your Mental Health By Dr David Sack

When we seek help for a mental healthcondition, we can expect to hear about various medications and treatment options, but what’s often missing from the conversation is any talk of lifestyle changes. In a recent University of Illinoisstudy(link is external), about half of those with symptoms of mental illness reported that they receive no wellness advice from their health care provider.
That’s a lamentable oversight because lifestyle changes—things as simple as nutrition and exercise(link is external)—can have a significant impact on quality of life, for any of us, but especially for those dealing with issues such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. They can also help minimize the development of risk factors that can lead to conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and hypertension, all of which are seen at higher rates in those with mental illness, the study noted.
If you are dealing with a mental health challenge, take the initiative when speaking to your clinician. Ask for specifics on what changes you can safely make in your daily life to improve your mental health; there’s no single answer. But research has shown that lifestyle changes in several key categories can pay healthy dividends for most. Among the most powerful:
1. Enhance Your Diet
Research shows that our diet can influence our mental health, for both good and bad. Fruits and vegetable are associated with better mental well-being, according to recent research(link is external)from the University of Warwick. That’s important because mental well-being—feelings ofoptimism, happiness, self-esteem and resilience—can help protect not only against mental health problems but physical ones as well.
Fatty foods, on the other hand, may increase the risk for psychiatric symptoms by changing the bacteria that live in our gut, according to new research(link is external). A study done with mice showed increased anxiety, impaired memory, repetitive behavior, and brain inflammation as a result of a high-fat diet. Some fats, however, fall into the “good” category. Omega-3 fatty acids such as are found in salmon, for example, may help(link is external) with some forms of depression.
Sugar, of course, should have only a minimal place in your diet. Not only can it spark rapid weight gain and an addictive response in some, it has been linked to higher rates ofdepression and can make mental health symptoms worse, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness(link is external) (NAMI).
2. Make Exercise a Priority
You’ll want to check with your doctor before you start any exercise regime, but physical activity has been shown to have significant benefits for those dealing with mental health issues. A Southern Methodist University study(link is external) labeled exercise a magic drug for those withanxiety and depression disorders and called on doctors to more widely prescribe it.Research(link is external) shows even low levels of activity—things such as walking or gardening for half an hour a day—can help ward off depression now and even later in life. Exercise has also beenshown(link is external) to improve the mental and physical health of those with schizophrenia. (One note: If you have bipolar disorder, be aware that exercise can trigger mania in some. Get your doctor’s OK before adding new forms of physical activity to your life.)
As a bonus, exercise helps not only with mental health and fitness but also with weight control. This is especially important because weight gain is a side effect of many medications for mental illness. Extra pounds may not only make you less healthy and more prone to developing illnesses such as diabetes, they can also add to your mental distress.
3. Practice Techniques to Reduce Stress
Stress (link is external)feeds mental illness, and mental illness feeds stress. Taking steps to minimize the stress in your life can help slow this vicious cycle. Consider adopting techniques such asmindfulness meditation; a Carnegie Mellon University study(link is external) found that even 25 minutes a day for three days in a row can reduce stress and build resilience. And a Johns Hopkinsresearch analysis (link is external)determined that meditation can improve symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Yoga is another powerful choice for stress reduction, as well as being good exercise. A Queen’s University study(link is external) found it can even help us view the world in a less negative, less threatening way, which can be a huge benefit for those with mental health disorders. (Again, a note for those with bipolar disorder: A recent study(link is external) found risks as well as benefits in yoga. According to a recent study, some with bipolar disorder found it a “life-changing” positive, while a minority reported it can intensify both high and low moods.)
4. Get Enough Sleep
We all crave a refreshing night’s sleep, but don’t always get it. We can boost our odds by committing ourselves to good sleep hygiene(link is external). That means going to bed and getting up at a consistent time, getting sufficient exercise (earlier in the day rather than late at night), avoiding heavy evening meals and caffeine, practicing relaxation techniques, and forgoing activities that get in the way of our shuteye, such as those Netflix marathons. If you’re still having trouble, don’t turn automatically to sleep aids, which research(link is external) shows may actually shorten your lifespan. See your doctor or a sleep specialist for help.
Making lifestyle changes in support of your sleep is well worth the effort. Poor sleep has multiple negatives: Studies show fatigue makes it harder to choose healthy foods, it’s been linked to obesity and cell damage(link is external), and it can make mental illness symptoms worse. Sleep deprivation has been shown, for example, to trigger schizophrenia symptoms(link is external). Consistently good sleep, on the other hand, can help keep stress at bay, as well as boost mood, protect the brain(link is external) and give us the energy we need to deal with all that life throws at us.

Facebook Now Worth More Than Wal-Mart

Facebook is now bigger than Wal-Mart, at least when it comes to its value on the stock market.
The world’s biggest online social network knocked the world’s largest retailer out of the top 10 list of the highest-valued companies in the Standard & Poor’s 500 index on Monday and the gap widened on Tuesday.
Facebook Inc. was valued at $242.7 billion as of late morning trading, its share price up more than 2 per cent at $86.59. Wal-Mart Stores Inc., meanwhile, was valued at $233.8 billion, its stock price down 21 cents at $72.58.
Facebook has been on a roll this past year, its shares up about 32 per cent in the past year compared with just 8.2 per cent for the S&P 500 index. Its quarterly results have consistently surpassed expectations.

Charleston Mayor Joseph Riley: Lack Of Gun Control Is 'Insane'

Charleston, South Carolina Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. (D) said on Sunday that the lack of gun control in the United States was "insane."
"It is insane: the number of guns, and the ease of guns in America. It just doesn't fit with the other achievements of this country," Riley told CNN's Jake Tapper. "It's a small -- really small group, well-funded -- that keeps this issue from being appropriately addressed."
Riley's comments came just days after Dylann Roof, 21, allegedly shot and killed nine people at Emanuel AME church in Charleston on Wednesday. Roof apparently bought the gun used in the shooting with money he received for his birthday in April. The church held its first services since the slaying on Sunday.
Several officials, including President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination, have called for action on gun control following the massacre.
But many lawmakers have expressed skepticism that tighter gun control is possible, citing Congress' failure to pass any kind of gun reform after 26 children and school officials were killed in a mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012.

President Muhammadu Buhari Order The Disposal of Nine Presidential Jets To Cut Cost

As part of the federal government’s cost measures,
President Muhammadu Buhari has directed that
nine of the VIP transport aircraft under the
presidential fleet should be sold.
Industry sources confirmed  that the
presidential fleet, which are registered as Nigerian
Air Force aircraft, is one of the largest in Africa and
the third largest in Nigeria after Arik Air and
Aerocontractors.
According to an aviation source, who is aware of
the directive to sell the aircraft, the presidency has
a number of serviceable and unserviceable aircraft
that need to be disposed of in order to reduce the
amount spent by the federal government for
aircraft maintenance annually.
“Nine, which still have market value, are to be sold
immediately to reduce maintenance costs,” he
said.
For years, the federal government has spent over
N12 billion annually for the maintenance of the
presidential fleet.

Obama On Charleston Shooting: 'This Type Of Mass Violence Does Not Happen In Other Advanced Countries'

President Barack Obama responded Thursday to the shooting at a historically black church in Charleston, South Carolina, that left nine dead.
"Any death of this sort is a tragedy, any shooting involving multiple victims is a tragedy," he said. "There is something particularly heartbreaking about death happening at a place in which we seek solace and we seek peace."
"I've had to make statements like this too many times. Communities have had to endure tragedies like this too many times," he continued. "Once again, innocent people were killed in part because someone who wanted to inflict harm had no trouble getting their hands on a gun. ... We as a country will have to reckon with the fact that this type of mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries."
Authorities apprehended suspect Dylann Roof, who they believe opened fire Wednesday evening at Emanuel African Methodist Church during a weekly Bible study gathering. Eight individuals were found dead at the scene, and another died later at the hospital.
South Carolina House Minority Leader Todd Rutherford (D) tweeted Thursday that he received a call from the president expressing his regret.

Everest Shifted 3 centimeters After Nepal Quake But Remains Same Height

Mount Everest, the world's highest peak, was moved 3 centimeters (about 1.2 inches) southwest by the magnitude-7.8 earthquake that devastated Nepal in April, Chinese authorities say.
But the April 25 quake, which left more than 8,000 people dead, did not affect the height of the 8,848-meter (29,029-foot) mountain, according to the report by China's National Administration of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation.
Chinese state media reported the administration had set a satellite monitoring system on the peak in 2005 to observe the movement of the mountain.
In the decade since, Everest had been moving northeast at a speed of 4 centimeters a year, and had grown by 0.3 centimeters annually, state media reported.
The April earthquake reversed the direction of the mountain, shifting it to roughly where it would have been nine months earlier.

Egypt Court Confirms Death Sentence For Ousted President Mohammed Morsi

An Egyptian court on Tuesday confirmed a death sentence handed to ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi over a mass prison break during the 2011 uprising that eventually brought him to power.
Morsi, Egypt's first freely elected president, was in the courtroom in a glass-covered cage, with mesh wires over it. He listened to the verdict with a slight smile but did not say anything.
The ruling was read out by judge Shaaban al-Shami after he consulted with Egypt's Mufti, a religious authority affiliated with the judiciary, as required by law in cases involving capital punishment.
"The court panel has unanimously agreed that there is no room for leniency or mercy for the defendants," al-Shami, who presides over a panel of three, said before confirming the death sentence.
The Mufti's opinions are not binding, and the ruling will automatically be referred to Egypt's highest appeals court.
The judge also confirmed death sentences for five other jailed leading members of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, including Mohammed Badie, the group's leader, and Saad el-Katatni, the head of its short-lived political party.
Al-Shami said the defendants conspired and attempted to kill police officers when they broke into three of Egypt's prisons, enabling some 20,000 inmates to flee, causing chaos in Egypt and breaching its borders with the Gaza Strip. He said they did so with the help of foreign militants from the Palestinian Hamas movement, Lebanon's Hezbollah and Sinai militants.
Another 21 imprisoned defendants received life sentences in the case, which in Egypt is equivalent to 25 years in prison. Another 93 defendants were tried in absentia and sentenced to death.
Now Morsi will change his blue prison outfit to an orange one in future cases. Morsi is already serving a 20-year sentence for his part in the killings in 2012 of protesters outside his palace when he was still president.
Morsi was forced out of office in July 2013 by the military amid massive protests demanding his resignation. He has been detained since then, and his Muslim Brotherhood has been labelled a terrorist organization.
Earlier Tuesday, the same judge sentenced Morsi to life in prison over charges of conspiring with foreign groups, including the Palestinian militant group Hamas. That sentence can also be appealed.
Al-Shami confirmed death sentences against 16 other Islamists, including three jailed senior Brotherhood members. The other 13 were tried in absentia. Morsi was among 17 defendants sentenced to life in prison in that case.

Nigeria & Others African Nations Consider Single Continental Currency, Passport

Anthony Maruping, AU Commissioner for Economic Affairs, said the Union was mooting the idea to adopt a single currency, as part of the Agenda 2063 road map.

He said in Johannesburg on Friday that it was aimed at connecting Africa through world class infrastructure with a concerted push to finance and implement major projects.

Maruping said all African central bank governors have already met and deliberated on the establishment of an African monetary fund.

He expressed the hope that the move would be the end result of the Agenda 2063.

Maruping said leaders of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi have already signed a protocol in Kampala for the adoption of a common currency in the
next 10 years.

He said many economists and experts believed that the ambitious programme of an African single currency was achievable. “The Payment Systems Steering Committee of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) has also proposed a system to facilitate cross-border payment and settlement.

“This system will allow the settlement of payment transactions in a central location on the basis of a single currency.

“This model will initially be tested on the current common Monetary Area countries that use the South African rand,” he said.

HSBC To Shed 50,000 Jobs

HSBC will shed 50,000 jobs in the coming years as it slashes costs and sells parts of the bank to focus on Asia.
The changes are part of a major restructuring plan that is designed to save the bank $5 billion annually by 2017.
HSBC will sell its businesses in Brazil and Turkey, reducing headcount by 25,000. In addition, another 22,000 to 25,000 job cuts are planned across the bank, which should reduce the total number of employees to roughly 208,000. As part of a previous effort to cut costs, HSBC axed nearly 40,000 jobs between 2011 and 2014.
HSBC also announced that it will emphasize online banking and self-service, allowing the bank to shutter 12% of its branches. Some of the bank's operations will be be moved to low-cost locations, and 75% of its software development will now be done in China and India.
"Since the start of 2011, we have materially reshaped HSBC, but it's also very clear that this has been insufficient to drive a revaluation of the firm and a higher share price," CEO Stuart Gulliver said.
HSBC shares initially jumped more than 1% in Hong Kong as investors reacted to the announcement, before sinking back in London trading.
"We recognize that the world has changed and we need to change with it," Gulliver said, emphasizing HSBC's plans to expand operations in Asia, especially in asset management and insurance.
The bank is expected to reveal more details during a conference call with investors on Tuesday. In addition to more information on job cuts and cost savings, investors will be looking for clues as to whether HSBC will move its headquarters.
The company is conducting a review, to be completed by the end of 2015, on whether it should relocate out of London. The bank's previous home, Hong Kong, is the most logical choice for a move.

FBI to Probe Russia And Qatar World Cup Bids

The FBI's investigation surrounding FIFA has now expanded to include the awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar, according to reports.
The review would be part of a probe that goes beyond the allegations of bribery in a US indictment of FIFA officials announced a week ago, an official told Reuters news agency.
FIFA, global football's governing body, awarded the hosting rights to these countries in 2010 but there have been calls to strip both hosts of the World Cup.
Nine FIFA officials and five business executives were indicted by the US last Wednesday on corruption charges, with seven arrested in Zurich ahead of FIFA's annual congress on Friday.
In a separate investigation, Swiss authorities had confirmed that they were looking into the bidding process for both tournaments.
Qatar's foreign minister, however, remained confident that the tournament will not be taken away from the Gulf Arab state.
"It's very difficult for some to digest that an Arab Islamic country has this tournament," Khaled al-Attiyah said on Wednesday.
"No way Qatar can be stripped [of it]. We're confident and deserve to win it because we presented the best file."
Greg Dyke, chairman of England's Football Association, had raised the possibility that the vote that awarded Qatar the tournament could be rerun.
"If I was the Qatari organisers, I wouldn't sleep very well tonight," he told British media on Tuesday.---
In response, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Bin Ahmed Al Thani, Qatar Football Association's president, said in a statement that Qatar had been cleared of any wrongdoing in the FIFA-commissioned Garcia report on corruption.
“Mr Dyke’s instinct to immediately focus on stripping Qatar of the World Cup speaks volumes on his views concerning what will be the first FIFA World Cup to take place in the Middle East," the statement said.
"Having already cooperated fully with Mr Garcia's investigation - and been subsequently cleared of any wrongdoing - we welcome the Office of the Swiss attorney general conducting its own work into the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups."
Russian response
For its part, Russia has also dismissed concerns it might lose the right to host the 2018 event.
"Cooperation with FIFA is going on and, most importantly, Russia is continuing preparations for the 2018 World Cup," Dmitry Peskov, President Vladimir Putin's spokesperson, said on Wednesday.
Among issues the FBI is examining is the stewardship of FIFA by Sepp Blatter, the football body's longtime president, who on Tuesday unexpectedly announced his plan to resign.
Blatter has not been directly implicated in the parallel US and Swiss criminal investigations into FIFA, which were announced last week.
Unidentified US law-enforcement officials, however, told the New York Times newspaper that "they were hoping to win the cooperation of some of the FIFA officials now under indictment and work their way up the organisation" in a bid to build a case against Blatter.
In another development on Wednesday, Chuck Blazer, a former FIFA executive committee member, told a US federal judge that he and others on the ruling panel agreed to receive bribes to vote for South Africa to host the 2010 World Cup.
Prosecutors unsealed the transcript of the 2013 hearing in US District Court in New York during which Blazer agreed to plead guilty racketeering and other charges.
Blazer, the former No 2 official of football in North and Central America and the Caribbean, said: "I and others on the FIFA executive committee agreed to accept bribes in conjunction with the selection of South Africa as the host nation for the 2010 World Cup "
Blazer also said he arranged bribes around 1992 in the vote for which country would host the 1998 World Cup.
